TASK 6: Mine by Beyonce ft. Drake

Mine - Beyonce ft. Drake
Throughout this video there are different styles and techniques used. It starts off with a very simple black background and with all the women dressed in white and nude colours. With Beyonce sitting the way she is, as if she's nurturing the other woman and the fact that she is dressed in a long white dress and with a head piece on suggests she is a pure and modest mothering figure. With the dancers dressed in nude flowing cloths and the fact that they are placed behind Beyonce, makes Beyonce stand out and makes her look almost as if she's coming off the screen. This relates to Andrew Goodwin's 5 Aspect theory. Beyonce is the 5th aspect of the video; she is the star image who's being made the center of attention.

There is no diegetic sound throughout the video and I do feel that this makes the video seem more professional and clean cut as it means there's nothing to distract from the music or the artwork. All the affect is created using the music and visual effects and as the pace of the song speeds up, the visual effects of the video kick in and Drake appears. Although the camera stays relatively still and all the action is created through mise-en-sene and editing, there is a point of view shot that shows Beyonce letting go of someone who the audience assumes is Drake. In the beginning of the video, Beyonce looks strong and powerful; as you see her letting go she seems like she's about to become weak until the video cuts to the next clip of her where she seems structured and empowered. Knowing the kind of message Beyonce tries to portray, the audience can see that she is trying to get across the idea that women can be empowered and feel good within themselves, both with and without a man.

I think the next part of the video compliments this idea and I find the way both genders are portrayed very interesting. Contrasting to your usual expectations, in the next clip the women are mostly covered up and dressed in flowing, neutral dresses that aren't typically provocative. They're standing up, dancing and seem tall. The men however are wearing t-shirts saying 'YOURS' and have them covering their faces, with their bodies exposed. One could say that in this video the men are objectified as opposed to the women.

Despite all this, the lyrics do suggest slightly differently and later on in the video you see not only a man in a 'YOURS' t-shirt but also with a woman in a 'MINE'. I think this links to the both patriarchal and very modern idea of relationships and the idea that your other half is your possession. The difference here is that the men belong to the women, instead of the other way around.

I do think that this video is aimed at a younger audience between 16-25. This is partly due to the presentation of the people involved, the clothes and makeup they wear, the paint that some of the dancers are covered in, the contemporary dance. I think it is a more modern way of expression and Beyonce does have a target audience of teenage girls.
