TASK 2: Childish Gambino: Glassnote Records

Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover is an American actor, writer, comedian, producer, rapper, director, singer and songwriter. Since 2011 he has been singed with Glassnote Records, owned by Universal Music Groups. He released his first album 'Camp', shortly after his signing, in November 2011.

Glover has collaborated with Lloyd, Jhene Aiko and Danny Brown and  and although he has announced that he will be retiring Childish Gambino and played his last set at Wireless Festival last summer, there have been rumours that he will be collaborating with Chance the Rapper at some point in the future.

Aiko has been signed to multiple labels such as Def Jam, Island Def Jam, ARTium, Epic and is currently working with TUG. ARTium is distributed by Island Def Jam recordings but parented by Universal Music Group, one of the Big3.

Although Gambino is more pop and rap than Aiko, who's more R&B, the two have a few similar artists in common such as ScHoolboy Q, Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

Despite this, Glassnote records have signed a group of artists and bands such as Two Door Cinema Club, The Temper Trap, Mumford and Sons, CHVRCHES and Daughter. Compared to Childish Gambino, these artist are on the other end of the scale producing alternate and indie pop/rock.

I love Gambino's album art and I think it really represents both the music on the albums themselves and also his taste and the kind of music he's produced and how it's changed over time. I also like the fact that you see his individuality and his own creativity as opposed to the record label's.

The record label Glassnote Records was started up by Daniel Glass who believes that by having fewer artists to work with, he can focus on "finding talent, creating music and bringing it to an audience". This is an advantage to being a part of an independent record label. He's able to maintain and contribute a dedicated focus on the artists and their music that mainstream labels simply can't. A large amount of mainstream music these days is taken completely under a blanket genre and has little individuality or diversity. This is because being apart of a mainstream label means being more about churning out the next smash hit single, rather than a high quality album.
